The iPhone continues to be the dominant smartphone in the industry. That doesn’t mean, though, that everyone loves it. The truth is, Android smartphones are siphoning a lot of users from the realm of iPhones. Andy Ihnatko is but one such user. And he’s a special user. He’s a tech writer, so he knows what makes for a superior smartphone. So his move means something. Fortunately, he’s written all about it for the Web site TechHive.
The big switch
Exactly why did Ihnatko make the switch? For the same reason that many other former iPhone users have: He thinks that Android’s operating system outperforms that of the iPhone’s. Quite simply, Android phones make it easier to browse the web, post messages on Facebook, watch movies and find directions to the newest Thai restaurant in the city.
The power of Android
Ihnatko writes that the Android operating system has grown into what he calls a great operating system. At the same time, the hardware that runs this system – the smartphones themselves – have become much better, too, he writes. That combination has steered him away from iPhone and toward Android-powered smartphones. Ihnatko is so enamored of his Galaxy smartphone, he has even given up on the unlimited data plan he held with his iPhone, a plan he had because he had joined iPhone nation so early.
Two crucial factors
Ihnatko identifies two key factors when detailing his smartphone swap. First, the keyboards that are included with Android smartphones are easier to use than are the ones that are included with iPhones, he writes. Secondly, the screens on Android-powered phones are larger. That makes a major difference in an age in which consumers use their smartphones to surf the Web and watch movies.
