You consider yourself a thoughtful Facebook user, one that invariably replies promptly to messages. But consider if you’ve missed hundreds of messages from co-workers, coaches, employers or family and friends year after year? Thanks to Facebook’s “Other” messages folder, you may have.

Uncovering the “Other”

New York Times technology columnist David Pogue recently explained the way the “Other” folder works. When users who aren’t registered as your Facebook friends send you a note, they can either pay $1 or agree to have their message deposited in your “Other” folder. Guess which option most people choose?

Lost messages

Unfortunately, this leads to plenty of lost messages. Most Facebook users have no idea there is an “Other” folder. That is why, they miss hundreds of potentially important messages each year.

Find these lost messages

Make today the day you open the “Other” folder.  In the left-side panel of your Facebook page click “Messages.”  There you’ll notice a light gray “Other.” Open it up. As Pogue writes, you might be astonished at how many party invitations and congratulations you’ve missed.
