How excited do many of us get when a new technology emerges? Very. We immediately think of how this new tech can improve our lives, change society and do away with most of the problems facing the planet. The problem? The vast majority of new technology doesn’t ever do this. Yes, Pinterest can be fun, but it isn’t going to change the whole world.

The truth about tech

The website Gizmodo recently took a amusing look at new technology and its impact, running a chart on its website listing all the possibilities that come with a new technology. Can it make us geniuses? Will make us more empathetic? Could it bring world peace? Will it make us all morons? The answer to these questions? According to Gizmodo, it’s “no”.

Small changes

The fact is, most new technology only creates tiny changes. The appearance of Facebook and Twitter, did change the way many of us communicate with family and friends. Nonetheless it certainly didn’t change the whole world. And that’s the point of the Gizmodo story: New technology does have the power to create small changes in the lives of individuals. But it seldom changes how the world works.

Teens

Of course, there’s something that never changes. As the Gizmodo story says, teens will use new technology to get into trouble and aggravate their parents. Just think, after all, of how much trouble teens have gotten into with Facebook and Twitter. That, Gizmodo says, will never change, regardless of what new technology presents itself.
